From Sundarbans

The beauty of Sundarbans lies mostly in it’s uniqueness. As far as the vision permits, your eyes will be soothed by green while cruising through the amazing river channels. The name Sundarbans is derived from Bangla name Sundorbon (meaning Beautiful Forest) and truly bears it’s significance.

Our tour included some common spots of Sunderbans like, kachikhali, Katka, Hiron Point etc. Here I just came with some regular features of Sundarbans. But if you want to experience the real magnificence of Sundarbans, want to experience with the honey collectors or want to catch a glimpse of the world famous Royal Bengal Tiger, you will have to stay there for months. I specially would appreciate the beauty of Katka beach. No doubt it’s a unique beach on earth- a small muddy and sandy beach with roots of mangrove tress peeping around from ground, which added the different earmark of the beach. Most the beaches in Bangladesh are long straight ones, but this one often takes turns. Standing on the beach you will experience a endless forest behind and an endless bay in front!

Our launch stopped somewhere in the middle of the river through Sundarbans. From there we rode on a boat and followed some other sub-channel. It was a cold evening of December. After ten minutes of boat ride we reached the Katka Beach. This part of the beach is muddy. We were enjoying walking on bare feet but were aware of quicksand too. Our guide alerted us earlier about the danger of quicksand in Katka. The sun was settling in the horizon and the environment was near to heaven. We were singing chorus, dancing like free birds, laughing as loud as we can. Suddenly the sunlight disappeared and we had to be very quick to return to launch.

On the next morning we wake up early at five o’ clock. We were one fifty member in total and this time we were divided in three sub groups with fifty members in each. I was in the second group. We rode on the boat again and landed after another ten minutes ride. Then the guide asked us to walk through the forest and told that it would take around half an hour’s walk to reach the other part of the beach. It was an incredible experience walking through the forest before sunrise, through the magic of light and dark, through dewdrops on leaves and grass under feet. We crossed a slippery wooden bridge (সাকো) over a small cannel with much risk of slipping down. We were walking and walking and at one time we noticed that it had been more than forty five minutes since we started. After some time we finally got that we are on the wrong track. Getting no other way we decided to follow the way back. After fifteen minute’s walk we met the third team and could find the right track following them. Getting lost was thrilling and somehow fun indeed!

The sun rose by this time and we missed enjoying the sunrise from beach. This part of Katka beach is sandy, waves landing on the mangrove tress, making them leafless and bare. Though it’s a big forest beyond but you will find most tress on the beach leafless. It is quite fun to hang on the leafless branches and rarely you can get some monkeys to join you. And no doubt, it is tremendously pleasant to sit on the sand or on a branch for hours just too stare at the waves in front and unknown birds roaming over.

After one hour’s stay at somewhere out of the world, we started walking back to the boat.
